RARE Bear Makers – Getting Started

Please watch the instructional video provided by our amazing partner and bear maker, Rob Appell! It will provide you with step by step instructions on how to make your very first RARE Bear and it is “beary” fun to watch!

Please make sure to register before starting work on your RARE Bear! Follow the instructions to complete your registration provided in the Welcome Email that you will receive once you submit your registration. Make certain to read through all of the RARE Bear instructions before you begin (see below). Although rare, our bears have strict requirements!

Note that the only pattern that can be used is the Simplicity Pattern C5461.  This pattern is only available online and there is both a cost for the pattern and shipping

Our bears are made using View E, the 18″ bear of the Simplicity pattern

Unfortunately we are unable to  accept Bears made from View A (22”) of the Simplicity pattern

Many of our kids have sensitivity issues. Here are our fabric requirements:

Clean and Unused 100% Cotton Quilting Fabric (please don’t used old pajamas or pre-worn fabrics)

Fabric you CANNOT use for bears:

  • Flannel
  • Corduroy
  • Fabric with Glitter or Embellishment
  • Fleece
  • Polyester

Suggested Fabric Themes:

Cars, Videogames, Star Wars, Superheroes, Sports, Animals, Princesses, Unicorns, Disney, Legos, Music, Dancing, Dinosaurs, and Trains.

We will send you one kit with feet fabric and a tag. Once you complete and mail back your first bear or bear skin, you can order additional sets of feet and serial numbered tags.  Those can be ordered on our website https://www.rarescience.org/rare-bear-program/rare-bear-army-signup/kits/

Bears can come to us stuffed, or unstuffed.  With or without embroidered faces. We have groups of sewers and stuffing volunteers here in San Diego that can finish them.  It is your call on what you prefer.

If you are applying a face to your bear (which is optional) remember to NOT use buttons or hard objects that could break or fall off the bear.

Completed bears should be mailed to:

RARE Science, Inc. Attn Christina Waters

874 Saxony Rd.

Encinitas, CA 92024

We are excited to have you involved in our RARE Bear project!  Please reach out with any additional questions and feel free to reach out to us if you should need anything along the way.
